The inaugural Cape Town Eco Film Festival took place at the Labia Theatre in Cape Town, South Africa from the 27th to the 31st of April in 2014.
The Festival was organized by While You Were Sleeping, a Cape Town based non-profit collective that organises public screenings of documentaries with important social, environmental and political themes.
A total of 1332 people attended screenings of 24 documentaries with a wide variety of environmental themes. Ten of the films were premieres and had never been screened publicly in South Africa before. Twelve of the films were feature-length documentaries while the remaining 12 were shorter in length. The films came from South Africa, the USA, Ireland, New Zealand, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Canada. All screenings were followed by an informal facilitated audience discussion and Q&A session.
Paying it forward with trees
For each ticket sold, R5 was contributed to Greenpop, a South African organization that plants trees in South Africa and Zambia. In addition, 21 “Tree Ticktes” were sold, each of which contributed R120 to Greenpop – the amount required by the organization to plant one tree. In total, R8245 was donated to Greenpop. That’s equivalent to 68 planted trees.
The Silver Tree Audience Choice Award
After each screening, audience members were asked to give each of the films they had just watched a score between 1 (poor) and 5 (excellent). A total of 1167 votes were cast during the duration of the Festival. The film that received the highest average score received the Silver Tree Audience Choice Award, named after the beautiful indigenous Silver Tree (Leucadendron argenteum), a member of the protea family that grows only on a few spots on the slopes of Table Mountain, Devil’s Peak and Lion’s Head on the Cape Peninsula.
The winner of the 2014 Silver Tree Audience Choice Award, with a near-perfect score of 4.9, was Bringing it Home. Close runners up were More Than Honey, Blackfish and The Last Ocean.
